Two women forge an unusual friendship across devastating divides in an engrossing Sudanese drama.

Wracked by guilt after covering up a murder, Mona — a northern Sudanese retired singer in a tense marriage — tries to make amends by taking in the deceased’s southern Sudanese widow, Julia, and her son, Daniel, into her home.

Across the divides of rich and poor, Muslim and Christian, north and south, light-skinned and dark, Mona and Julia become friends.

Mohamed Kordofani’s well-performed deep cut into Sudan’s recent history unfolds like a morality thriller. Telling the story of a fraught friendship between two very different women, Kordofani’s intelligent, compassionate scripting ensures that the political never overwhelms the personal. Yet it also illuminates just how well the fault lines that divide a nation can map onto the rifts within a human heart divided against itself.

Legendary director Jerzy Skolimowski created one of his freest and most visually inventive films yet with this story of a gray donkey named EO.

After being removed from an itinerant circus, EO begins a trek across the countryside, experiencing cruelty and kindness from a cast of characters including an Italian countess (Isabelle Huppert) and a Polish soccer team.

Nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Feature, and featuring stunning cinematography by Michał Dymek coupled with Paweł Mykietyn’s resonant score, EO presents the follies and triumphs of humankind from the perspective of its four-legged protagonist on a quest for freedom.

Join us for a revealing Q&A session with director Madeleine Blackwell, talking about her Australian drama, undiscovered connections, and how mere humanity can bond us all.

Ali (Ali Al Jenabi) is not a citizen.
He drives a taxi using another man’s license and relies on the GPS to negotiate his way around a city he doesn’t know.

His passenger, Esther (Imelda Bourke) is an old woman who can’t remember where she is going. She is angry because she has been stripped of everything that is familiar to her and she doesn't recognise the world anymore.

They travel through the night in search of a vague destination while surveillance cameras mark their journey, coldly redacting the human element, defining who belongs and who does not, who is safe and who is not.

What they are left with is their damage – she can’t remember and he can't forget.

"Stunning." Mat Kesting, Adelaide Film Festival Director

"Imelda Bourke the singer, in her film debut at the age of 92 and she is fantastic... It's a glorious film." Peter Goers, ABC Radio National Adelaide

"Damage is a poetic film of deep emotions which travels through the night and the rain to find beauty and affinity, bound together by two magnificent performances from Ali Al Jenabi and Imelda Bourke." Noel Purdon, former recipient of the Pascall Prize for Film Criticism
