STOP MAKING SENSE (G)

Runtime: 106mins

Cairns Botanic Gardens 78-96 Collins Ave, Edge Hill, QLD, Australia
Book Tickets

A Jonathan Demme masterpiece capturing Talking Heads at the peak of its powers in 1984.

Stop Making Sense is all killer, no filler.

This re-mastered 40th anniversary release widely regarded as the greatest concert movie ever made, an irresistibly uplifting chronicle of a Talking Heads show from 1983 has lost none of its famed ability to move you as it gets you moving.

Originally filmed over four nights, the results are a terrific piece of filmmaking that finds all the right ways to show a performance that begins as minimalist as possible and expands into something truly joyous, as well as weird, funky, and very fun.

It’s difficult to watch Stop Making Sense and not have a great, engrossing time, a fact that’s as true now as it was in 1984. With the benefit of hindsight, it may even be more so.

BYO Chairs, pillows, blankets and picnic on the grass. Please no glass.

MR BLAKE AT YOUR SERVICE (PG)

Runtime: 110 min

Event Cinemas Cairns Central 1/21 McLeod St, Cairns, QLD, Australia
Book Tickets

Adapting his own 2012 hit novel Complètement cramé!, first-time film-maker Gilles Legardinier’s delightful dramedy is highly likely to be this year’s Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.
John Malkovich plays a recently widowed and burnt-out business leader whose pilgrimage back to the place where he met his late wife lands him an unexpected new role as a butler.
Features a cadre of memorable moments, witty bon mots and a pitch-perfect cast that also includes Fanny Ardant, Émilie Dequenne and Philippe Bas.
As with Mrs. Harris, it’s that there’s substance behind the crowdpleasing swagger and style that means Mr. Blake leaves a mark. There are crises to be overcome, hard edges to be blunted and tough conversations to be had, as both the visitor and the inhabitants of Domaine de Beauvilier have much to learn from one another.
In the end though, it’s simply an opportunity to just immerse yourself in two hours of life-affirming, pure cinematic joy. - James Croot

In French with English subtitles. (PG)

Ten years later, Harry and Sally meet again at a bookstore, and in the company of their respective best friends, Jess (Bruno Kirby) and Marie (Carrie Fisher), attempt to stay friends without sex becoming an issue between them.

Rob Reiner's touching, funny film set a new standard for romantic comedies, and he was ably abetted by the sharp interplay between Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan.

When a Belfast schoolteacher crashes into the orbit of two unpredictable and raucous best-friends, the needle drops on a hip-hop act like no other.

Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin, and JJ Ó Dochartaigh leap onto the screen to play themselves in this heightened comedy-drama about the anarchic group, Kneecap, who become unlikely figureheads of a civil rights movement to save their mother tongue.

Armed with a blend of native Irish and English verses and furious, politically charged rhymes, the trio must overcome police, paramilitaries and politicians trying to silence their defiant ketamine-fuelled sound. In this fiercely original sex, drugs and hip-hop biopic, also starring Michael Fassbender, KNEECAP is a rollicking trip into the meaning of pure defiance.
